Information, Digital Media and Technology

The Information and Digital Media course provides a foundation in general computing and employment skills that enable participation in an information technology environment in any industry. The course provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in introductory ICT technical functions. It also assists students to achieve a degree of confidence and self-sufficiency as an advanced ICT user.

Qualification

ICT30115 – Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology

  • Students undertaking the 240 hour course will be eligible to achieve a Statement of Attainment towards Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology.
Course Duration/Hours

This is a 240 hour course that runs over 2 years. It may be possible to undertake a 120 hour course in Information, Digital Media and Technology.

60 hour or 120 hour Specialisation Study courses may also be available. Your school will confirm availability.

Note: A total of 420 hours is required to complete the full qualification. If your school does not offer this it is available during Term 4 of Year 12, post HSC exams as part of our Smart & Skilled program.

HSC Information

This is a Board Developed Course, Category B. Students who complete the 240 hour course may sit for the optional HSC exam. Mandatory units of competency from the list below are examined.

One Category B course (2 units) may be counted towards the calculation of the ATAR for university entrance. Students not wishing to achieve an ATAR need not sit the HSC examination.

Work Placement

NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requires students to complete a minimum of 70 hours of work placement. Work placement is a mandatory component of the course and must be completed prior to the HSC exam.

Days worked as part of a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship satisfies this NESA requirement.

Assessment

This course is competency based and the student’s performance is recognised against a prescribed industry standard. Assessment strategies may include:

  • Observation
  • Student demonstration
  • Questioning
  • Written tasks
  • Tests

Students are given a number of opportunities to demonstrate competence across the range of competency standards covered by this course.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may be entitled to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning. If you have completed any training, either through your part-time work, TAFE or other school VET courses you have completed recently, or through experience gained in other ways you can apply for RPL. You should talk to your School VET Coordinator, Careers Adviser or course teacher for further information.

Costs

A course fee is generally charged by schools to cover consumable materials. Your school will provide further advice.

Students undertaking the 240 hour course will be eligible to achieve a Statement of Attainment towards Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology, as will students undertaking the 60hr Specialisation.

Duties and Tasks

IT support technicians may perform the following tasks:

  • Identify the hardware and software needed to provide solutions to problems
  • Assist with the customisation and adaptation of existing programmes to meet users; requirements
  • Provide telephone, face-to- face and online support to customers
  • Download and install appropriate software
  • Connect users to networks and provide initial training in facilities and applications
  • Talk with vendors and programmers
  • Provide information relating to customers; hardware and software purchasing decisions
  • Make sure users can use the equipment by providing personal tuition and self-help instructions
  • Undertake housekeeping and reporting functions for the area of responsibility
