Certificate III in Make-up is a nationally recognised qualification and reflects the role of individuals employed as make-up artists to design and apply make-up for a range of purposes and occasions across the beauty, fashion, media and entertainment industries.

These individuals possess a range of well-developed technical and consultation skills where discretion and judgement is required and are responsible for their own outputs. This includes working cooperatively with a range of individuals including photographers, fashion stylists and media production staff.

Course Duration/Hours

This qualification is available as either:

  • 360 hour course which runs over 2 years (available at Southern Cross Catholic College only)
  • 240hr course over one year, usually following successful completion of the Salon Assistant course (at St Joseph TSC Hinchinbrook)

Units towards this qualification may be available in a 120 hour Hair or Beauty Services course. Please discuss with your Trade Training/Skills Centre.

Students are required to undertake the 360 hour course to, upon successful completion, achieve the Certificate III in Make-up. Depending on units of competency already achieved, students undertaking the 120 or 240 hour courses may achieve a Statement of Attainment towards Certificate III in Make-up. Students with sufficient units achieved in previous courses may be able to achieve the full certificate.

HSC Information

This is a Board Endorsed Course and therefore has no HSC examination.

Work Placement

NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requires students to complete a minimum of 70 hours of work placement. Work placement is a mandatory component of the course and must be completed prior to the student’s last HSC exam.

Days worked as part of a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship satisfies this NESA requirement.

Assessment

This course is competency based and the student’s performance is recognised against a prescribed industry standard. Assessment strategies may include:

  • Observation
  • Student demonstration
  • Questioning
  • Written tasks
  • Tests

Students are given a number of opportunities to demonstrate competence across the range of competency standards covered by this course.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may be entitled to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning. If you have completed any training, either through your part-time work, TAFE or other school VET courses you have completed recently, or through experience gained in other ways you can apply for RPL. You should talk to your School VET Coordinator, Careers Adviser or course teacher for further information.

Costs

A course fee is generally charged by schools to cover consumable materials. Your school will provide further advice.

Students completing 120 or 240 hour courses generally achieve a Statement of Attainment towards Certificate III in Make-up, unless they can be granted RPL. Students will need to satisfactorily complete the units of competency in 360 hours of study to achieve the full qualification.

Career Information

Job Roles

Make-up artists design and apply makeup to actors, presenters and models, and for special occasions such as bridal parties. They may also work for cosmetic companies applying makeup, advising customers about the most suitable products and selling products. They may be involved in preparing skin for makeup, applying makeup, giving advice about makeup, maintaining makeup during photo/film shoots, and liaising with hairdressers about hairstyles and makeup. They may also use makeup to produce special effects such as ageing or injuries (bruises and scars) or for specialised characters in a movie. They may need to work with wigs, false beards or masks and artificial body parts to create the required look for a character.

Beauty therapists undertake a range of therapeutic facial and body care treatments and aim to improve their clients’ appearance and well-being. Their skills are required by both women and men. They apply and sell make-up, skincare and other cosmetic products, treat skin conditions and provide beauty treatments such as electrolysis, massage, facials, manicures and pedicures, waxing and spa therapy. They may also undertake some administrative work and should keep records of clients’ treatments.

Duties and Tasks

Make-up Artists and Beauty Therapists may perform a variety of different tasks in the course of a working day, including:

  • Conducting skin analysis and advising clients on skin and body care.
  • Performing facial or body massage and treatments, including spa therapy, reflexology and aromatherapy.
  • Removing facial or body hair through waxing or electrolysis.
  • Lash and brow treatments.
  • Applying make-up and advising clients on make-up application techniques.
  • Performing manicures and pedicures.
  • Making appointments, maintaining client records and handling financial transactions.
  • Selling and providing advice on cosmetic and skin care products.
