Stage 5 Construction

This qualification provides an introduction to the construction industry, its culture, occupations, job roles and workplace expectations. The units of competency cover essential work health and safety requirements, the industrial and work organisation structure, communication skills, work planning, and basic use of tools and materials. The qualification is built around a basic construction project unit that integrates the skills and embeds the facets of employability skills in context

Qualification

CPC10120 – Certificate I in Construction

Students who successfully complete all the units of competency in the Stage 5 Construction course will be eligible for a Statement of Attainment towards Certificate I in Construction.

Course Duration/Hours

This is a 100 hour course that runs over 1 year in either Year 9 or 10.

Year 10 students may be eligible to undertake an Early Commencement of the Stage 6 Construction course. Some schools may require the completion of the Stage 5 Construction course in Year 9 prior to enrolment in an Early Commencement program.

NESA Information

This is a Board Endorsed Course for Stage 5 students. It can contribute to the Record of School Achievement  (RoSA).

Work Placement

There is no mandatory NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) work placement component for Stage 5 VET courses. However, work placement may be required for school-based assessments.

Assessment

This course is competency based and the student’s performance is recognised against a prescribed industry standard. Assessment strategies may include:

  • Observation
  • Student demonstration
  • Questioning
  • Written tasks
  • Tests

Students are given a number of opportunities to demonstrate competence across the range of competency standards covered by this course.

Units of Competency

To be eligible for this qualification you must successfully complete: 11 units, 8 core, 3 electives. The following 6 units are included in the Stage 5 course, providing students with a Statement of Attainment towards Certificate I in Construction.

  • CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (Core)
  • CPCCWHS2001 Apply WHS rquirements policies and procedures in the construction indiustry (Core)
  • CPCCOM1017 Prepare simple construction sketches (Elective)
  • CPCCVE1002 Undertake a basic computer design project (Elective)
  • CPCCCM1011 Undertake basic estimation and costing (Core)
  • CPCCCM2004 Handle construction material (Elective) (pre-requisite: CPCCWHS2001)
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may be entitled to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning. If you have completed any training, either through your part-time work, TAFE or other school VET courses you have completed recently, or through experience gained in other ways you can apply for RPL. You should talk to your School VET Coordinator, Careers Adviser or course teacher for further information.

Students who successfully complete all the units of competency in the Stage 5 Construction course will be eligible for a Statement of Attainment towards Certificate I in Construction.

Costs

A course fee is generally charged by schools to cover consumable materials. Your school will provide further advice.

Further Study

Students can continue into Stage 6 Construction to undertake Certificate II in Construction Pathways.

Career Information

Job Roles

Trades; assistants work with carpentry tradespeople by handling construction materials, using tools and equipment, erecting and dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on ground.

Duties and Tasks

Carpenters may perform the following tasks:

  • Construct formwork into which concrete is poured
  • Set out an outline of the building on the ground of the site, using string and pegs to allow for excavations
  • Build floors, wall frameworks (timber or metal) and roofs, and lay timber floors
  • Read plans and specifications to determine the dimensions, materials required and installation processes to be followed
  • Install metal and timber windows, sashes and doors
  • Construct and erect prefabricated units, such as cottages and houses
  • Cut materials with hand and power tools, and assemble, nail, cut or shape parts
  • Install door handles, locks, hardware, flooring underlay, insulating material and other fixtures
  • Maintain and sharpen tools
