VET Courses

Below is a list of all the VET courses offered to secondary students by Sydney Catholic Schools RTO. Please note: not all courses are offered at every school. To find what courses are available at your local school see ‘Courses by school’ below.

COVID-19 Vaccination is required to work in a number of industries. Students need to meet NSW Health Orders vaccination requirements to undertake work placement or an SBAT in such industries. Work placement is mandatory for most VET courses to provide credit towards the HSC.

Courses

  • Automotive Servicing Technology (SBAT) - Students undertaking a School Based Traineeship, will undertake the Automotive Servicing Technology qualification. This includes the skills and knowledge required to perform a limited range of servicing operations tasks related to inspecting and performing minor repairs on mechanical and electrical components and systems of cars (light vehicles), heavy vehicles and/or motorcycles within an automotive service or repair business.
  • Automotive Vocational Preparation - This course prepares students to perform a limited range of tasks related to the mechanical and electrical components and systems of cars, heavy vehicles, outdoor power equipment, bicycles, marine craft and motorcycles.
  • Baking - This course would suit students who are interested in a career in retail baking. It includes units that are pre-requisites to the Certificate III in Baking qualification, which is available to students undertaking an apprentcieship through the TAFE EVET program, or post school in a full-time apprenticeship.
  • Beauty Services - Through this course students can learn the knowledge and skills required to undertake the role of individuals employed as make-up artists to design and apply make-up for a range of purposes and occasions across the beauty, fashion, media and entertainment industries.
  • Business Services - Certificate III in Business is a nationally recognised entry-level qualification for employment in the Business Services industry. This course would suit students who are interested in a career in a business environment and in other personal contact & service occupations such as legal or medical secretary, business management, marketing, advertising and finance. The knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired by students in this course will also be of value in future study and daily life.   • Community Dance, Theatre and Events - This course provides essential training for individuals wanting to work in a variety of community-based performance and production contexts. It assists students to develop discretion, judgement and relevant theoretical knowledge. They may provide support to others involved in productions.
  • Construction - The course qualification is nationally recognised entry-level qualification for employment in the Construction industry. This course would suit students who are interested in a career in the building and construction industry, building certification or project management in that industry.
  • Construction 120hr Specialisation – Carpentry - The course qualification is nationally recognised entry-level qualification for employment in the Construction industry. This course would suit students who are interested in a career in the building and construction industry, building certification or project management in that industry.
  • Early Childhood Education & Care - This course prepares students for the recognised entry-level qualifications required for employment in the Community Services industry. The course would suit students who are interested in either a career in Education, the Child-care Industry or part-time work while undertaking further study.
  • Early Childhood Education and Care – Extension 2022 - This qualification is recognised as the entry-level qualification for employment in the Child Care industry. Students interested in undertaking a Diploma post school are strongly advised that the completion of the current Certificate III is paramount to gaining recognition for their school studies.
  • Electrotechnology - During this course students cover competencies for work entry program providing grounding in safety and basic skills and knowledge for work in any electrotechnology discipline.
  • Entertainment Industry - This course would suit students who are interested in a career in the Entertainment Industry, working in possible jobs such as stage-hand, technical assistant in lighting and sound.
  • Events (Tourism, Travel & Events) - This course would suit students interested in a career in event operations with event management companies, event venues, or organisations which organise their own events, in a range of industries.
  • Fitness - This course prepares students for entry-level qualifications required for employment in the Fitness industry. Due to the elective specialisation chosen, it provides a pathway to work as the role of gym instructors.
  • Furniture Making Pathways - Throughout this course, students develop the skills and knowledge required to perform the manufacture of free-standing furniture or built-in cabinets, and provide on-site assistance in the installation of furniture or cabinets involving known routines and procedures and some accountability for the quality of outcomes.
  • Hairdressing - This course prepares students for the role of individuals who work as salon assistants, competent in performing routine functions under direct supervision as part of a hairdressing team: communicating in the workplace, interacting with and providing service to clients and assistance to colleagues.
  • Hospitality – Cookery (from Yr11 2023) - This qualification reflects the role of individuals working in kitchens who use a defined and limited range of food preparation and cookery skills. They are involved in mainly routine and repetitive tasks and work under direct supervision. This qualification provides a pathway to work in kitchen operations in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafes, cafeterias, coffee shops and institutions such as aged care facilities, hospitals, prisons and schools.
  • Hospitality – Food and Beverage - The course would suit students who are interested in a career in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry, working in hotels, motels, restaurants, clubs, catering organisations, resorts, travel and tourism organisations.
  • Hospitality – Kitchen Operations (Yr12 2023) - This course provides a pathway to work in kitchen operations in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafes, cafeterias, coffee shops and institutions such as aged care facilities, hospitals, prisons and schools.
  • Hospitality 120hr Specialisation – Catering Operations - This qualification provides a pathway to work in various catering settings such as hospitals and aged care facilities, sporting and entertainment venues, hotel banqueting departments, cook–chill production kitchens and mobile catering businesses of varying size.
  • Human Services – Individual Support (Ageing) - This course would suit students interested in a career in the Health Industry. Individual Support Professionals provide high quality person centred support to customers in all aspects of their daily life. They work in the community and in residential care homes providing crucial, respectful, dignified, safe care which encourages independence whilst adhering to the individual’s support plan. Certificate III qualifications are recognised entry-level for employment in the Health industry, so students could work part-time in the health sector while undertaking further study in this area.   • Human Services (Acute Care) - This course would suit students interested in a career in the Health Industry. Acute Care professionals work in hospitals and aged care facilities such as nursing homes, performing a wide variety of tasks: meeting the needs of patients, performing administrative tasks and assisting other medical professionals. Certificate III qualifications are recognised entry-level for employment in the Health industry, so students could work part-time in the health sector while undertaking further study in this area.   • Human Services (Allied Health) - This course would suit students interested in a career in the Health Industry. Allied Health professions include, but are not limited to: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and dietetics. The Allied Health Team provides multidisciplinary support in private practice, hospitals and aged care facilities. Working as an allied health assistant includes preparing for and assisting with therapy sessions, providing relevant information to clients, using therapy equipment correctly and safely, and completing administrative duties.   • Information and Digital Technology - The Information and Digital Media course provides a foundation in general computing and employment skills that enable participation in an information technology environment in any industry. The course provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in introductory ICT technical functions. It also assists students to achieve a degree of confidence and self-sufficiency as an advanced ICT user.
  • Music Industry (Performance) - This qualification prepares individuals to apply a broad range of competencies in varied work contexts in the music industry. The course would suit students who are interested in performing music to an audience. Students may also wish to complete this course for general interest and to assist in part-time work while undertaking further study.
  • Plumbing - This course is designed to introduce learners to the recognised trade skills and knowledge in the plumbing industry. If undertaking a School Based Apprenticeship, the course will provide meaningful credit in a plumbing industry Australian Apprenticeship. The qualification may be completed post school as part of an apprenticeship. Occupational titles may include plumber, gasfittter and drainer and outcomes will be dependent on streams undertaken within the course. This course is delivered at St Yon Trade Training Centre (at LaSalle Catholic College Bankstown) by Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools (RTO Number 45649).
  • Primary Industries - This course would suit students interested in a career in the Agriculture Industry, working in possible jobs such as an assistant animal attendant/stockperson or Farm or Station hand/worker/labourer.
  • Retail Services - This course would suit students interested in a career in the retail environment, retail management, marketing, advertising and finance.
  • School Based Educational Support - This course is available to School Based Trainees (SBT) only. The course would suit students who are interested in either a career in Education, or part-time work while undertaking further study such as a Bachelor of Education. This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of education settings, including public and independent schools and community education settings, who provide assistance and support to teachers and students under broad-based supervision.
  • Screen and Media - This course prepares students to apply a broad range of competencies in a varied work contexts in the film, television, radio or digital media industries.
  • Sport Coaching - This course would suit students who are interested in sharing their skills and knowledge of a particular sport by undertaking a coaching role under supervision or independently in a sporting club or school, both while at school and post-school while undertaking further study in this or a related field.
  • Stage 5 Automotive - This qualification provides an introduction to the Automotive industry, its culture, occupations, job roles and workplace expectations. The units of competency cover essential work health and safety requirements, the industrial and work organisation structure, communication skills, work planning, and basic use of tools and materials.
  • Stage 5 Construction - The skills and knowledge developed during this course will benefit students to successfully undertake a Stage 6 VET Construction course, or will assist students who wish to begin an Australian Apprenticeship in the Construction industry.
  • Stage 5 Hospitality - The skills and knowledge developed during this course will benefit students to successfully undertake a Stage 6 VET Hospitality course, or will assist students who wish to begin an Australian Apprenticeship in the Hospitality industry.
  • Stage 5 Retail - This qualification provides an introduction to the retail services industry, its culture, occupations, job roles and workplace expectations. The units of competency cover essential work health and safety requirements, the industrial and work organisation structure, communication skills and work planning.
  • Stage 5 Vocational Pathways - Skills for Vocational Pathways is designed for Stage 5 students who need skills to prepare for a vocational pathway qualification or further foundation skills development. It is suitable for individuals who require: a pathway to employment and further vocational training reading, writing, oral communication, learning and numeracy skills primarily aligned to the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 2 entry level digital technology and employability skills education, training and employment goals.
  • Stage 5 Workplace Skills - Workplace Skills is an entry-level course which provides students with fundamental, transferable skills and knowledge that underpin all workplace performance. It can lead to further study in either technical or non-technical vocations, or to achieve entry level employment in a variety of industries.
  • Stage 6 Vocational Pathways - Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways is nationally recognised entry-level qualification for successfully gaining and retaining employment in a variety of industries. This course would suit all Stage 6 students, especially those who would be advantaged by undertaking a focus on developing literacy, numeracy, data, employability and workplace learning skills.
